For the most part, wedding planning is a magical, exciting time; but with so much going on, it can also be super stressful too. If you’re feeling totally overwhelmed at the moment and are looking for ways to get rid of wedding stress, I’d like to say two things: 1. You are absolutely not alone and 2. Welcome to Dotty & Bright, you’ve come to the right place!

As a mindfulness coach for brides, I’ve got a number of ways to get rid of wedding stress in my trusty toolkit. Today, I want to focus on one of my favourite tools, positive affirmations, and how to use positive affirmations to get a hold of that pre-wedding anxiety;

What even are positive affirmations?

Positive affirmations, as you might have guessed from the title, are positive statements that you tell yourself regularly to help reframe negative thoughts. Just like habitual exercise helps build up physical strength, repeating these positive affirmations can help reprogram your thinking patterns, and reframe negative thoughts into (you guessed it!) more positive ones. This makes them a really effective way to combat our negative thoughts and acts of self-sabotage by challenge limiting thoughts or ‘untruths’. In turn, this helps reduce our stress, anxiety and overwhelm.

So why are positive affirmations a good way to get rid of wedding stress?

Studies have proven that self-affirmation decreases stress generally, so I’ve created specific positive affirmations for brides to really get down to the nitty-gritty of wedding stress. However, the wonderful thing about positive affirmations is that it’s a practice that you can use again and again: because it’s a tool you can personalise and then build into a daily habit, it can be used long beyond your wedding too.

How do positive affirmations work as a way to get rid of wedding stress?

In addition to generally helping you reframe your thoughts more positively, positive affirmations are a really good way to reset your energy towards someone or something. This comes in really handy when, for example, something goes wrong, or at least doesn’t go to plan – perhaps one of the wedding party start making life difficult for you, or your wedding venue has to make some big changes last minute. Practicing positive affirmations helps you to not dwell on it, but to instead change your perspective; this means less time stewing on it, and more time doing something else that brings you much more joy and excitement.

You can also use positive affirmations to set intentions around not only your wedding, but your relationship and marriage to be too. As well as being positive, affirmations should also be present, meaning they work best when they’re framed as already happening. This is a really powerful way of not just imagining exactly what you want, but going one step further and visualising yourself as there!

If positive affirmations sound like they’d help you as a way to get rid of wedding stress, and you’d like to know where to go next, I’ve created a whole bridal affirmation card set in my shop. Or, why not get monthly affirmations through the post (everyone loves gifts, even to themselves!) in my mindful brides subscription box?
